Barry’s approach to interior design has evolved over three decades working in Nashville…then Southern California…and then Nashville again: "Design should be pleasant for everyone, and I always want my clients to be completely involved from start to finish. My preferences are clean, non-flashy, uncluttered looks, no matter how traditional or contemporary. A Nashville native, Barry began his career 30 years ago by talking his way into a job doing displays for a Nashville furniture store -- then expanded his position to include buying and pricing accessories and helping customers when the designers were not available. After deciding he needed to expand his horizons, Barry moved to Los Angeles. He worked for a design firm there before venturing out on his own. “I learned so much during those years.” says Barry. “Most of the jobs I did were high-end, contemporary designs. Many homes were perched on the sides of mountains overlooking the Pacific Ocean. One was a home with a pool in the middle of it overlooking a golf course and the Pacific beyond. The entire house was white with black accents. Working on those exceptional projects was a great experience.”
After twelve years designing in Los Angeles, Barry returned to his hometown where he has developed his own eclectic signature style that blends unexpected elements of old and new furnishings and accessories with rich combinations of fabrics and splashes of color – providing a unique mixture of the contemporary and the traditional. In 2001 Barry opened his full-service studio and showroom, b. wilker & co., attracting other top interior design talent from the Nashville area. In mid-2007 the firm purchased new space and moved to its expanded location in Green Hills on Bedford Avenue in the Bedford Commons development, one street west of The Mall at Green Hills.
